World Day for Physical Activity 2023 was marked by the launch of a series of activities targeting the youth and learners with special education needs, today, at the Côte D’Or National Sports Complex.
The Vice-Prime Minister and Minister of Education, Tertiary Education, Science and Technology, Mrs Leela Devi Dookun-Luchoomun; the Minister of Youth Empowerment, Sports and Recreation, Mr Stephan Toussaint; the spouse of the Prime Minister, Mrs Kobita Jugnauth; the Director of Mauritius Sports Council, Dr. Henry Bernard Baptiste; the Chairperson of the Special Education Needs Authority (SENA), Mrs Savitree Oogarah; the Director of the SENA, Mr Arvin Authelsingh, and other personalities were present on the occasion.
The event is an initiative of the Mauritius Sports Council in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, Tertiary Education, Science and Technology; the SENA; the Mauritius Recreation Council and the Mauritius Multisport Infrastructure to provide inclusive sport and physical activities for all while ensuring the growth and development of young people.
Established since 2002, World Day for Physical Activity is observed annually on 6 April by the World Health Organization (WHO) to encourage each person to get moving for better global health. The Day is promoted through the WHO together with other stakeholders who strive to disseminate the benefits of adopting a more active and healthier lifestyle by practicing some physical activity daily.
