The Prime Minister, Mr Pravind Kumar Jugnauth and his spouse, Mrs Kobita Jugnauth, participated, today, in a 45 minutes-walking activity in the compound of the Queen Elizabeth College (QEC) along with students, in the context of the World Walking Day to be observed on 03 October 2021.
The Vice-Prime Minister, Minister of Education, Tertiary Education, Science and Technology, Mrs Leela Devi Dookun-Luchoomun, the Senior Chief Executive of the Ministry, Mr Ravi Meettook, the Rector of QEC, Mr A.K. Bissoonauth and the Chairperson of the Mauritius Sports Council, Mrs Sarah Rawat-Currimjee also took part in the activity.
On that occasion, Prime Minister Jugnauth signed the QEC’s Visitors Book.
In his welcoming remarks, the Rector of QEC expressed enthusiasm for wholeheartedly participating in the walking activity and supporting TAFISA’s World Walking Day initiative. He extended his appreciation for the presence of the Prime Minister and his spouse at the event.
In a brief statement, Mrs Rawat-Currimjee pointed out that the walking activity is line with the vision of the Ministry of Education to foster a holistic approach in the school curriculum and to encourage students’ participation in a physical activity. She dwelt on the importance of less sitting and more walking for a healthier lifestyle.
She further highlighted that the walking activity is being extended in all primary and secondary schools across the country till 03 October 2021, as part of the activities marking the World Walking Day.
The World Walking Day was launched in 1991 by TAFISA, a leading international association promoting Sport for all with over 320 members in more than 170 countries. The aim is to integrate physical activity in everyday life by promoting the benefits of walking.
