Hasinah Haulkhory, 23 years old, received yesterday, from the hands of the Deputy Prime Minister, Steven Obeegadoo, the keys to her new home at the Alizee Residence, in Petite-Julie. The ceremony took place in the presence of the Private Parliamentary Secretary, Rajanah Dhaliah. The Minister of Gender Equality, Kalpana Komjoo-Shah also met the beneficiary on site.
This single mother has a 4 year old daughter, Kaira. Kaira has a heart condition and suffered complications during surgery. Since then, she has suffered from several disabilities and Hasinah was forced to give up her job as a shop assistant to care for her daughter. The young woman lived with her daughter at her maternal grandmother’s home in Cité Briqueterie, St-Croix. She shared a room with her mother and her two brothers, aged 28 and 8 respectively.
With the initiative of the NHDC and the help of NGOs and her father, Ali Haulkory, Hasinah will finally be able to aspire, with her sick daughter, to a better quality of life. During the ceremony, the DPM announced his intention to study the case of those who are unable to make a deposit to buy a house from the National Housing Development Corporation. The proposed formula is to rent these NHDC homes until the individual finds the financial means to make a deposit to eventually become a homeowner.
