A police motorcyclist assigned to the Traffic Branch is being investigated for soliciting a bribe from a motorcyclist in the car park of the Riche Terre shopping centre.
In a video recording filmed without his knowledge by the motorcyclist, the officer is seen negotiating and reducing the amount of the bribe to cancel his ticket. “Mo pa pe fer bezer avec ou, mo pe pran zis sa Rs 1000 la! Aller prend ou motocylette aller”, the officer can clearly be heard agreeing to pay Rs 1000.
This video, which has gone viral on social networks, has attracted enough attention for police chiefs to be forced to act. We have learned from official sources that the police officer was transferred to the Operation Room of the Metropolitan Division in Port-Louis (North) this morning.
A second video has been circulating since yesterday evening of the whistleblower and someone close to the officer trying to convince him over the phone to drop the case.
At this stage, no formal complaint has been lodged with the police regarding these allegations of corruption. However, an internal investigation has been launched at the Central Barracks.
