A 33-year-old bricklayer from the Cassis area was seriously attacked with a saber on the afternoon of Sunday 23 July in Rue Sainte Marie, Cassis. The alleged assailant was none other than his work colleague. The man in his thirties explained that he was struck in the head and face with a sabre because he refused to drink with him. The injured man was admitted to the ward of the Dr A.G. Jeetoo Hospital, Port-Louis. The suspect, Stephane Guylan Gentil, aged 29, was arrested shortly afterwards.
A sergeant from Bain des Dames police station gave a statement concerning a case of premeditated assault involving the thirty-year-old. The thirty-year-old was walking along rue Sainte Marie, Cassis at around 4.45pm on Sunday 23 July when he was attacked with a sabre. He was hit in the head and face. As he was bleeding, he was unable to move and collapsed in the street.
He told the police sergeant that an argument had broken out between him and his friend because he refused to drink alcoholic beverages with him. A police patrol in the area found his alleged assailant at around 5.45pm on the same day, as he was walking along Rue Sainte Marie, Cassis. The police found in his possession a sword with a forty-five-centimetre blade and a fourteen centimetre wooden handle. This sharp weapon was hidden under his T-shirt behind his back.
Asked why he had the sword in his possession, he said, “mo kamouad ine gagn bate mo bizin defann li”. Stephane Gentil from Petite Rivière was arrested on a charge of possession of an offensive weapon. He was placed in a cell at La Tour Koenig police station in Pointe aux Sabres.
On the morning of Monday 24 July, he was brought before the Port-Louis court.
