In Parliament this afternoon, the Prime Minister made a statement to announce the government’s decision to intervene to restore the purchasing power of Mauritians. Government will therefore apply a price control on 7 categories of products. These are canned fish (sardines and pilchards), canned tomatoes, cheese, edible oil, grains, margarine, and milk powder. “This concerns a total of 243 brands,” said Pravind Jugnauth. He added that consumers will be able to pay the same prices for these products as in January 2021. These subsidies will cost the government Rs 500 million. The new prices of these products will be frozen for six months.
