For having made disparaging remarks about a student’s hairstyle on Saturday, the management of University of Technology Mauritius has met and taken the decision to dismiss the lecturer with immediate effect. This is what the Director of the University of Technology, Dr Dinesh Hurreeram, announced. The incident occurred on Saturday in the middle of a class on the university’s premises at the La Tour Koenig. Esha Luchoomun, a student, alleged that a lecturer made disparaging remarks about her hairstyle. She complained to the Programme Coordinator. Dr Dinesh Hurreeram, Director of UTM, explains that he was informed of the incident on Monday. He immediately called a meeting with the other senior staff. After consultations, the decision was taken to dismiss the lecturer with immediate effect. Dr Hurreeram adds that the management does not want the students to be penalised by this decision. Every effort will be made to find a competent person to continue the programme.
