Molotov Cocktails Were Thrown At A House In Cité Martial

Must Read

A house on rue Alfred Gele, Cité Martial, Plaine-Verte was attacked with molotov cocktails in the early hours of Tuesday morning, June 7. One of the house’s occupants, who was sleeping on a sofa in the living room at the time, was hit by a projectile. Burned, she was taken to Dr. A.G. Jeetoo Hospital, Port-Louis for treatment before being transferred to Victoria Hospital, Candos, where she was admitted to the Burns’ Unit.

In a deposition made during the day on Wednesday June 7, a 29-year-old hawker who lives in this house explained the circumstances of the attack on her house with molotov cocktails at around 2.15am on Wednesday June 6. She was talking to her son, nephew and niece in her bedroom. Her sister, a 41-year-old hawker like her, was asleep on a sofa in the living room near a window overlooking the street.

A motorcycle crossed in front of her house, and at the same time she heard an explosion in the living room. She ran into the living room and saw the sofa on fire and her sister’s clothes burning. She called out, “ki pe arrive la”, after hearing the voices of two men. One of them called her names and said, “to pou mor zordi”. At the same time, a second Molotov cocktai landed on the carpet, which caught fire. The motorcycle sped off towards Paul et Virginie street.

The woman told police she couldn’t identify her two men with smoke emanating from the room and the lights out. After throwing a canvas over her sister to extinguish the flames, she drove her to Dr Jeetoo Hospital, before she was transferred to Candos Hospital.    She estimated the damage caused by the fire at Rs 25,000.

In the neighborhood, the presence of this family, which has lived in the house since the end of 2022, is undesirable. Illegal activities take place there until very late at night and even in the early hours of the morning. This situation, they claim, disturbs their peace and harms the reputation of the neighborhood. The house, they claim, belongs to a policeman who rents it to this family, who live there with at least a dozen other people.

The case was referred to the Major Crime Investigation Team (MCIT) of the Central Criminal Investigation Department (CCID). On Wednesday June 7, six people were questioned in connection with the Molotov cocktail attack. They were subsequently released.
