A violent accident occurred this Monday morning June 20 on Ferret Road in Midlands between a school van and a Grand Port District Council truck. The impact was so violent that both vehicles were seriously damaged. 8 school children, aged between 5 and 9, were injured. They were able to return home after receiving treatment at the Jawaharlall Nehru Hospital in Rose-Belle. The Midlands Police have opened an investigation to determine the exact cause of this accident.
It was around 8:10 a.m. on Monday, June 20, that this accident occurred on Ferret Road in Midlands. The school van was driven by a 35-year-old male resident of Camp-Fouquereaux while the Grand Port District Council truck was driven by a 59-year-old resident of Rose-Belle. At some point, the two vehicles collided. Eight schoolchildren, who live in the village of Mahébourg, as well as a 50-year-old woman from Camp-Fouquereaux and a 29-year-old teacher from Plaine-Magnien were injured.
The injured schoolchildren were evacuated to the hospital in an ambulance from the Emergency Medical Service. The two women who were in the van were also taken to the hospital. The helper in the van was the only one admitted to the ward.
Both drivers were given a breath test by Emergency Response Service officers, which was negative.
