Sri Lanka’s High Commissioner to India, Milinda Moragoda, met with Indian National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval on Thursday in Delhi. The Sri Lankan ambassador discussed the ongoing economic crisis in Sri Lanka and sought India’s support towards getting global assistance in the economic recovery of the island nation. The meeting was also attended by India’s Deputy NSA, Vikram Misri and the Deputy High Commissioner of Sri Lanka, Niluka Kadurugamuwa.
Milinda Moragoda and Ajit Doval did a comprehensive review of the bilateral relationship between the two nations and also discussed priority areas for future cooperation.
As per a statement by the Sri Lankan High Commission, “The discussion particularly focused on the present economic crisis in Sri Lanka, and the High Commissioner thanked the National Security Advisor for the support that is extended by the Government of India to Sri Lanka to manage the situation.” The statement further said, “In this context, High Commissioner Moragoda requested India’s assistance in garnering international support for the economic recovery in Sri Lanka, to which the National Security Advisor responded positively.”

It is to be noted that Sri Lanka has been facing its worst economic crisis since its independence for the last 50 days. The island nation faces food and fuel shortages, power cuts and increased prices. Last week, amid massive protests, Mahinda Rajapaksa resigned from his position as prime minister. India has lent a helping hand to its neighbor which faces over $51 Billion in foreign debt.
