A Violent Fire Ravages Atlantic Store In Port-Louis

The Atlantic Store, located on Jummah Mosque Street, Port-Louis was engulfed in flames on Friday afternoon, March 25. A fire that started on the floor of this store which was used as a warehouse for firecrackers and also a club for senior citizens quickly spread throughout the building. The fire department of the capital was called to the scene of the fire to contain it. Even if no inventory has been made so far, the damage is considerable.

It is around 3 pm that the alert of this fire was given. The whole capital was witness to the thick black smoke of the fire. Employees of other businesses in this street informed the manager of Atlantic Store of a fire on the floor. This after having noticed smoke coming from this place. Immediately the place was evacuated.  At that very moment nine people were in the senior citizens club. They and the staff of the store got out safely.

In the meantime, a station of firemen of the capital arrived on the spot, as well as policemen of the police station of Trou-Fanfaron. This street was secured and a detour was made for road traffic. Deputy Police Commissioner Mardaymootoo Rassen, who is in charge of operations within the police force and also of the Special Supporting Unit, was on the scene to direct operations. Technicians from the Central Electricity Board were dispatched to the scene to disconnect the store from the power grid. According to police investigators, the building belongs to the Lai Fat Fur family.

Firefighters remained at the scene of the fire until very late in the evening of Friday, March 25. An investigation has been initiated to determine the circumstances of this fire.
