A survey conducted on Tuesday revealed that around two-thirds of Britons dislike and feel no sympathy for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, Prince Harry, and Meghan Markle. A survey by global opinion and data firm YouGov claims that 43 percent of 2,2627 British adults stated they felt unsympathetic toward Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.’
In addition, while 22 percent of Brits said they felt a “fair amount” or “lots” of sympathy for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, only 13 percent of the Britons felt neutral for the royal couple.
The polling was conducted soon after Markle’s solo podcast, her interview with The Cut, and the announcement of the couple to visit Germany in the first week of September, as per a report by Newsweek.
The individual popularity of the royals begins with Queen Elizabeth II on top of the chart in the UK, followed by Kate Middleton, Duchess of Cambridge, Prince William, Duke of Cambridge, late Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, and lastly, Princess Anne- daughter of the Queen.
The downfall in Prince Harry and Markle’s popularity began with the couple stepping down from their duties as royals and moving to the US. Their popularity declined even more after the couple’s interview with Oprah Winfrey in March 2021 followed by Harry’s memoir the same year.
According to the polling data’s readings, the couple’s popularity down trended the lowest in May before they visited the UK for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations. This visit was Markle’s first public appearance in the country after abstaining from the royals.
The polling in May surveyed that 65 percent of Britons were skeptical of Markle which was opposed by the 23 percent of Britons who saw her positively. Around 11 percent said they “didn’t know”. Her net positive scored – 42, which was her lowest.
For Price Harry, 32 percent of the Britons were in favor of the Duke of Sussex. His popularity rose in November 2017, when he got engaged to Markle.
The data firm, YouGov conducted polling in America in February, that surveyed the couple to rank at the fifth and sixth position in the chart of the most favorable British royal, according to the Newsweek report.
Late Princess Diana holds the most popular British royal, among the Americans. Followed by the Queen at the second rank and Prince William and Kate ranked third and fourth place, respectively.
The polling was conducted after Markle’s interview with New York where she shared her relationship with the Royal Family. She said, “forgiveness is really important” and added she has “a lot to say until she doesn’t.”
