The formal ceremony marking 54 years of Mauritius’ Independence and 30 years since its accession to the status of a Republic was held on Saturday 12 March 2022 at the Château du Réduit under the sign of sobriety, simplicity and symbolism. This was due to the health restrictions linked to the Covid-19 pandemic.
The traditional flag-raising ceremony at the State House took place under a blazing sun. Because of the Covid-19 pandemic, this ceremony was held in the presence of a limited number of guests.
At noon, the Mauritian quadricolour was hoisted to the top of the flagpole, under the gaze of the Prime Minister, Pravind Jugnauth, the President of the Republic, Prithvirajsing Roopun and the Minister of Arts and Cultural Heritage, Avinash Teeluck. Our national anthem was played loud and clear on this special day as the flag was raised.
This year, Policewoman Sweety Lungar and Lance Corporal Mitres Appa, assigned to the Special Mobile Force, were appointed to raise the quadricolour in Reduit. After the flag was raised, there was the traditional 21-gun salute.
The ceremony was also marked by a parade of the various units of the Mauritian Gendarmerie.
At the end of the ceremony, the President of the Republic and the PM unveiled a new logo of the ‘Mauritius Kestrel’, which is the national bird of Mauritius.
