Marie Luciana Bégué, a 19-year-old girl, met a tragic end on Saturday morning, March 12, at Cocoterie Road, Roche-Bois. The motorbike, on which this resident of Cité La Cure was travelling as a passenger, collided with another two-wheeler. The impact was so brutal that the teenager was thrown onto the asphalt. The driver left her on the spot before fleeing. The 20-year-old driver, who lives in Batterie-Cassée, Roche-Bois, is being sought. The personnel of an ambulance from the Emergency Medical Service (SAMU) were called to the scene of the accident. Unfortunately, the doctor on board was only able to pronounce her dead.
The driver of the other motorbike, 57 years old and living in Plaine-Verte, was injured and was taken to the Dr A.G. Jeetoo Hospital, Port-Louis for treatment. The victim was not wearing a helmet at the time of the accident. The autopsy attributed his death to a skull fracture.
It was at around 6.55am on Saturday 12 March, as the country was celebrating the 54th Anniversary of its Independence and the 30th Anniversary since its ascension to the status of a Republic, that this tragic accident occurred. The motorbike, on which Luciana Bégué was riding, was coming out of the direction of Sainte-Croix and was heading towards the roundabout of the Cocoterie, Roche-Bois road. At a certain point, this vehicle collided head-on with another motorbike on this road almost at the corner of Tamarin and Cocoterie roads, not far from the Glasslam Mauritius Ltd company.
The body of the teenager was taken to the mortuary of the Dr Jeetoo Hospital for an autopsy. The autopsy, carried out by Dr Prem Chamane, Principal Police Medical Officer, attributed her death to a skull fracture.
An investigation has been initiated at the Abercrombie Police Station, St. Croix to shed light on the circumstances of this accident.
Luciana Bégué’s funeral is scheduled for this Sunday 13 March.
