The education system is currently facing a shortage of teachers. In order to alleviate this problem, 425 primary school teachers are undergoing intensive two-year training at the Mauritius Institute of Education. They will then teach in schools. An induction ceremony was held on Tuesday 5 March at the Paul Octave Wiehe Auditorium in Réduit.
The course will cover both the theoretical and practical aspects of a primary school teacher’s job. It will be validated by a Teacher’s Diploma. At the ceremony, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education, Youdhisteer Munbodh, addressed the future educators. “This is a new stage in your professional career and you, as teachers, have a key role in the emotional, mental, educational and social development of the child”, he said.
He pointed out that a child must acquire values and principles. These include discipline, responsibility, respect, compassion, integrity and accountability. He spoke of reforms in the education sector. He added that educators can propose new, sustainable, creative and innovative ways of teaching. He explained that the Ministry had used 122 supply teachers this year to make up for the shortage of educators.
