Agalega is no longer spared by the Covid-19. The island has recorded its first cases, 13 inhabitants of the North Island. They were tested positive this Monday. This, following a massive screening exercise in both islands on Monday. Fortunately, no case has yet been detected in the South Island. Let’s recall that an Indian worker was tested positive and evacuated on Saturday to Mauritius before being admitted to the Jeetoo hospital. He did not show any symptoms of Covid-19 on the island or during his medical evacuation. However, a “rapid antigen test” performed upon his arrival at the Dr. A. G. Jeetoo Hospital was positive.
The Ministry of Health and Welfare started a large-scale screening campaign on Friday, July 23, on the two islands of Agalega. 13 more people were detected positive for Covid-19. It should be noted that all the positive people are from the North Island. All tests conducted on the South Island were negative. Screening exercises are continuing today.
The 13 patients have minimal symptoms of respiratory problems and do not require admission to a medical facility, according to the Department of Health and Welfare. Agalega has a population of nearly 400 people, including 100 on the South Island and 300 on the North Island. There are also 1,200 Indian workers on the North Island.
