The first Carnival Mobilisation for the 12th Commission de la Jeunesse et des Sports de l’Ocean Indien (CJSOI) 2022 Games was held, this morning, from Jardin Medine Bambous to Germain Commarmond Stadium in Bambous. The aim of the Carnival was to sensitise the Mauritian population on the CJSOI Games which will be held in Mauritius from 04 to 11 December 2022.
The Minister of Land Transport and Light Rail, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration and International Trade, Mr Alan Ganoo, and the Minister of Youth Empowerment, Sports and Recreation, Mr Jean Christophe Stephan Toussaint, were present. The Carnival comprised 18 groups of young people aged 14 to 35 years from the regions of Black River, Port Louis, and Lower Plaines Wilhems. A total of about 600 youths from colleges, Youth Clubs, Regional Youth Councils, and NGOs participated.
In a statement, Minister Toussaint highlighted that the Carnival is being organised in the context of the 12th CJSOI Games. He added that a series of activities will be held across the country, namely Carnivals at Bambous on 22 August, Triolet on 24 August, St Pierre on 07 September, and Mahebourg on 14 September. He encouraged all the youths and the Mauritian population to participate and to show their full support to the Mauritian athletes during the Games.
The Carnival was also marked by a cultural programme and a prize giving ceremony, held at Germain Commarmond Stadium, during which the three best groups which participated in the Carnival were remitted cash prizes. Loreto College of Port Louis bagged the first place and won a cash prize of Rs 50,000. The second prize was awarded to Warriors’ Group which received Rs 30,000 as cash prize. St Mary’s West College in Petite Rivière came in the third position and was rewarded with Rs 20,000 as cash prize.
Seven countries will participate in the 12th CJSOI Games namely Mauritius, Comoros, Djibouti, Madagascar, Mayotte, Reunion Island, and Seychelles.
