Ezechiel Marie, 21, a fisherman by trade and resident of Camp Dorbel, Grand Gaube, was taken prisoner late in the afternoon of Tuesday May 28 at the Anti-Drug and Smuggling Unit (Adsu) office in Poudre d’Or, after his half-brother was arrested earlier following the discovery of a plastic bag containing 233.31 grams of cannabis and the sum of Rs 100,200 suspected to have come from the sale of the drug. The value of the drugs seized is estimated at Rs 279,272.
A team from the Divisional Crime Intelligence Unit (DCIU), led by Inspector Mohes of the Metropolitan Police’s Northern Division, accompanied by men from the Field Crime Intelligence Unit, arrived at Ezechiel Marie’s home with a search warrant urgently signed by Superintendent Buchoo of the Northern Division’s Criminal Investigation Division (CID). Ezechiel Marie was suspected of drug trafficking.
When the police arrived, he was nowhere to be seen. This exercise took place in the presence of his half-brother, a 20-year-old bricklayer living at the same address.
During the search, the officers found a clear plastic bag containing 233.31 grams of cannabis in a bedroom cupboard. The street value of this drug is Rs 279,272. During this search, another bag of cannabis was found.
Transparent plastic bag was found. It contained the sum of Rs 100,200, in various denominations. Ezechiel Marie’s half-brother, who was confronted with these exhibits, remained silent.
He was arrested and taken to the Adsu office. After his half-brother constituted himself prisoner and affirmed that the drugs and money belonged to him, he was allowed to leave.
Ezechiel Marie was brought before the Pamplemousses court on Wednesday morning, May 29. He is facing a provisional charge of drug trafficking. He was held in a police cell.
