At a press conference during the lunch break, Xavier-Luc Duval returned to the theme of his Private Notice Question. He once again referred to Navin Beekarry’s remuneration as Icac’s director general. The latter took up his post in 2016 and his contract was renewed in 2021. “As required by law, the Prime Minister had consulted me. I had written a long letter saying that his contract should not be renewed. But the Prime Minister appointed Navin Beekarry for five years,” he said.
Referring to the Prime Minister’s refusal to reveal the salary of the Icac director general, Xavier-Luc Duval reiterated that Navin Beekarry receives Rs 650,000 per month. “A prime minister gets Rs 270,000 as salary, a chief justice Rs 219,000 and the DPP Rs 175,000. Mr Beekharry gets Rs 650,000 including his other allowances. This is almost three times the salary of a judge or a DPP. It is twice that of the Prime Minister. Why should he be paid so much? Why should we be ashamed to say how much he earns,” he said.
