Xavier Duval, the leader of the opposition spoke about the postponement of the municipal elections. For him, this decision is “shocking”. He speaks of “a real attack on democracy because without elections, there is no democracy! He even went so far as to say that the decision was “illegal and unconstitutional”.
He recalled that the Privy Council had annulled the postponement of municipal elections in Trinidad and that since 2022, all democratic countries in the world have held elections normally. “Moreover, they were held in Rodrigues,” he said. Xavier-Luc Duval said that no explanation was given to justify this new postponement because “simply because there is none!
He said that once recovered, he will bring together all the opposition parties to decide what to do.
