The importance of practising a physical activity regularly to maintain a healthy lifestyle was highlighted, today, by the Prime Minister, Mr Pravind Kumar Jugnauth at La Laura/Malenga Sports Complex. He participated this morning in a walking activity along with residents of the region of La Laura/Malenga in the context of World Walking Day 2022. The itinerary was as follows: La Laura/Malenga Sports Complex – La Laura/Malenga – Reservoir Road – Viewpoint – Viewpoint Store – Malenga Junction – La Laura Village Hall – La Laura/Malenga Sports Complex
The activity, an initiative of the Ministry of Youth Empowerment, Sports and Recreation in collaboration with the Mauritius Sports Council, the National Youth Council, and the Mauritius Recreation Council, was simultaneously conducted in 20 other regions across Mauritius including Rodrigues.
The Vice-Prime Minister, Minister of Education, Tertiary Education, Science and Technology, Mrs Leela Devi Dookun-Luchoomun, the Member of Parliament, Mr Yogida Sawmynaden, the Chairperson of the Mauritius Sports Council, Mrs Sarah Rawat-Currimjee, and other personalities also took part in the activity.
In a statement, Prime Minister Jugnauth commended the Ministry for organising World Walking Day across the Republic of Mauritius to sensite the population to be physically active. He also lauded the Mauritius Sports Council for organising the World Walking Week last week in all pre-primaries, primary, secondary, private, and Special Education Needs schools, as well as in tertiary education institutions, during school hours within school compound.
The Prime Minister reiterated Government’s commitment through the National Sports Policy to promote a sporting culture among the population. He also spoke of governmental investment in sporting infrastructures such as walking tracks across the country and appealed to the population to avail themselves of facilities being put at their disposal for a good health.
The Prime Minister further pointed out that the practice of a physical activity is important to prevent non-communicable diseases while adding that walking is a beneficial activity.
