Dismissed on Sunday evening as Minister of Agro-industry, Vikram Hurdoyal has resigned as member of Parliament of constituency no 10 this Tuesday. This means that the Prime Minister will have to choose between a by-election or general elections. It is more likely he will choose the second option the National Assembly will be automatically dissolved in November.
Up to now, the Speaker nor the relevant party, Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth, have made the announcement or verified the information. As it is normally done, the fired minister will have submitted his letter of resignation to Sooroojdev Phokeer, Speaker of the National Assembly. The Speaker will have 15 days from the date he receives the resignation letter to submit it to the Presidency for certification.
Some members of the opposition have reacted to the resignation. Most spoke of Vikram Hurdoyal’s courage. The President of the Labour Party points out that humiliation has a limit and that Vikram Hurdoyal has shown that he has dignity. “I salute his courage and he has been consistent in his stance,” he says. MMM’s Ajay Gunness agrees: Vikram Hurdoyal has shown that he has dignity and did not bow to the Prime Minister, who did not have the decency to wait for his return, even though he knew he was coming back after medical treatment.
