Yesterday, the Ministry of Local Authorities has issued a statement to rebuke the version of former director of the weather station. This statement follows the fact that a letter, written by Ram Dhurmea and addressed to the head of the civil service, went public. The former director of meteorological services said that he has followed all protocol. But the Ministry of Local Authorities insisted, in that press release, that Ram Dhurmea had provided inaccurate information on the trajectory and risks associated with cyclone Belal.
According to the Ministry, during a second meeting of the National Crisis Committee was held at 5 pm on Sunday January 14, 2024, the then director of Mauritius Meteorological Services presented a new scenario in which he said that the risk of Belal changing course and coming closer to Mauritius was almost impossible and that the cyclone warning class 1, which was in force at that time, could be withdrawn in the 04:00 bulletin the following day.
Yesterday, a video aired by MBC in the 7 p.m. television. This video was captured during the National Emergency Operations Command meeting on Sunday, January 14. During this meeting Ram Dhurmea was heard saying that the weather was going to lift the cyclonic warning on Monday, January 15 and that Belal was no longer a threat to Mauritius. Ram Dhurmea, who retained the services of Me Gavin Glover, will face a disciplinary committee following his suspension.
