The former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, who was thought to want to succeed Liz Truss, has withdrawn from the race for the presidency of the Conservative Party and the post of Prime Minister, he said Sunday in a statement.
Boris Johnson will not participate. It would not be the right thing to do,” said the former 10 Downing Street tenant. It’s impossible to govern properly if you don’t have a united party in Parliament.”
The withdrawal could pave the way for the appointment of former finance minister Rishi Sunak as early as Monday.
“The UK is a great country, but we are facing a deep economic crisis,” Rishi Sunak, 42, who served as finance minister from February 2020 until last July, when he resigned, wrote on Twitter. “That’s why I’m running to be the leader of the Conservative Party and your next Prime Minister. I want to fix our economy, unite our party and get things done for our country,” he continued.
After a busy political week, two candidates have declared their candidacy: Rishi Sunak and Parliamentary Relations Minister Penny Mordaunt.
