After Kevin Allagapen, student Komal Lochun was able to cross the Polish border. He is safe but exhausted. He is currently in a refugee camp in Poland, 60 km from the German border. The Foreign Minister said that a good number of Mauritians had evacuated.
Respite from the conflict
Kevin Allagapen is currently being hosted by the Mauritian volunteer Shubam until he makes further arrangements. Komal Lochun a dental student and son of Superintendent of Police, Manoj Lochun ended up in a refugee camp to recuperate. He was the leader of a group of students heading to Poland. They walked 80 km, which took three days, in adverse weather conditions before reaching this car, where two Mauritians were waiting to drive them to this refugee centre. This journey took about 24 hours. This respite from the Russian-Ukrainian conflict in the refugee camp, which is 60 km from the German border, will be brief. The conditions for a good rest are not favourable. He will have to go to Warsaw for a longer stay with a fellow Mauritian. Discussions are open about repatriating Kevin Allagapen and his family as well as Komal Lochun.
Alan Ganoo: “very difficult time »
The Minister of Foreign Affairs said that “the Mauritian government had been able to evacuate a good number of our citizens from Ukraine”. The Embassy and supporters are assisting those Mauritians and Mauritian families in Ukraine who want to leave the country permanently or temporarily. Alan Ganoo also mentioned that this war is also a “very difficult time” for our island and that “Mauritius is very concerned about this conflict.” Mauritius supports the United Nations in its position and is among the 141 countries that denounce the invasion of Russia in Ukraine. Mauritius stands in contrast with the partner and neighbouring countries such as India, Pakistan, China, South Africa, Madagascar and Mali and other African countries that are not taking a position in this conflict.
