Two Deaths On Our Roads In 24 Hours

Must Read

The black series continues on our roads. In the afternoon of Monday March 20, a motorcyclist was killed under the wheels of a truck in Le Hochet, Terre-Rouge. Early Sunday morning, a pedestrian was mowed down by a car that did not stop at the Saint Martin road near the cemetery. The victim did not survive his injuries. The driver of the car, a 22-year-old hairdresser from Quartier Militaire, was arrested shortly afterwards. Another youth who was in his company was also arrested. It was only during the day on Monday, March 20, that the victim was identified by his fingerprints. It is Louis Tamby, 36 years old and living in Roche-Bois.

It is around 1 pm this Monday March 20 that this motorcyclist knew a tragic end. He was riding his two-wheeler on the Royal Road in Le Hochet, Terre Rouge, when he was hit by a truck. Seriously injured, an ambulance of the Emergency Medical Service (Samu) was sent to the scene of the accident to transport him to the hospital, but the doctor on board unfortunately had to note that he had already given up the ghost.

His body was then transported to the morgue of the Dr. A.G. Jeetoo Hospital, Port-Louis for an autopsy. The autopsy, performed by Dr. Shaila Prasad-Jankee, Principal Police Medical Officer, attributed his death to multiple injuries.

It was at approximately 6:55 a.m. on Sunday, March 19, that police officers from the Barkly, Beau Bassin police station went to Saint Martin Road near the cemetery. The body of a man in his forties with a tattoo on his left arm was discovered on this road. He had wounds on his body. Everything indicates that he was the victim of a hit and run.

Surveillance camera footage was viewed. The victim was seen at 1:46 a.m. on the morning of Sunday, March 19 walking along Raymond Rivet Street, Saint Martin coming from the direction of Canot. He was heading towards Mont Roches. At 1:52 a.m. two vehicles were seen driving on this road coming from Canot. They were driving towards Mont Roches. The first vehicle is a white Mahindra, registered to a company based in Beaux Songes. The other vehicle is a gray Toyota Saloon, owned by a resident of Quartier Militaire.

The police officers who went to the home of the owner of the Toyota Saloon had to learn from his relatives that he is not in Mauritius and that it was his brother who was driving the vehicle. The latter was arrested in his barber shop. One of his friends living in the village who was in his company at the time of this inhabitant was also embarked by these police officers. After being questioned the two men were arrested and placed in custody. The driver of the van was also arrested this Monday morning of March 20.

The autopsy performed on the body of Louis Tamby late Sunday afternoon, March 19, by Dr. Prem Chamane, Principal Police Medical Officer, attributed his death to brain damage.

An investigation has been initiated to shed light on the exact circumstances of these two accidents.
