Several personalities from the political, judicial and civil society world were present to pay a last tribute to Yousuf Mohamed. Here is the tribute of the Prime Minister, the President of the Republic and the Chief Justice.
Pravind Jugnauth: Yousuf Mohamed was a “very fine jurist”
The Prime Minister paid tribute to the former Senior Counsel this morning at his house. Pravind Jugnauth described the former Yousuf Mohamed as a “very fine jurist” and “an excellent lawyer”. The former Labour Minister passed away on Sunday evening at the age of 88. Pravind Jugnauth expressed his sadness at the departure of Yousuf Mohamed. He said that he worked with him when he was a practising lawyer. “We were opponents sometimes and sometimes we work together,” said Pravind Jugnauth.
Pradeep Roopun: “Yousuf Mohamed has left his mark on the legal profession”
The President of the Republic was among those who came to pay their last respects to Yousuf Mohamed on Monday. For Pradeep Roopun, who said he worked and crossed swords with the former Senior Counsel, the latter “marked the legal profession”. Yousuf Mohamed, according to him, was a “hard worker”, as well as a “courteous” man, but above all “one of the best ‘cross-examiner’ he has known”. Roopun is a solicitor by profession.
“Yousuf Mohamed was witty”, said the Chief Justice
Mr Yousuf Mohamed was the first lawyer that Rehana Mungly-Gulbul, the current Chief Justice, met when she returned to the country. This is what she said this morning. The Chief Justice came to pay her last respects to Yousuf Mohamed. The Chief Justice said that the Senior Counsel “will be missed”. She explained that Yousuf Mohamed, at the time, had taken her to see all the Senior Counsels. “That was the practice then… but not anymore,” she said. For Rehana Mungly-Gulbul, he was a man of humour.
