The series continues on our roads since the start of the new year 2024. To date, the number of deaths on our roads is thirteen, compared with nine for the same period in 2023. The latest is that of Jean Marc Collet, a 49-year-old pedestrian who was mowed down by a car on the evening of Monday January 29 on the Bypass road in Goodlands. On Sunday morning, January 28, Krishan Satyajit Beesoo, a 38-year-old Quality Controller, was killed at the wheel of his BMW when it crashed head-on into a metal post on the overpass on New Airport Road in Rose Belle. The car was travelling southbound. A passenger beside him was seriously injured. The 38-year-old company director is admitted to the intensive care ward at Rose Belle’s Jawaharlall Nehru Hospital. They both live in La Marie, Vacoas.
At around 9:30 p.m., police officers from the Goodlands police station went to the Bypass road in Goodlands, where an accident had occurred near the new market. A man was lying on the asphalt on the left-hand side of the road. Fifty meters further on, a grey Toyota car with a damaged windscreen. Its radiator was facing in the direction of Belmont. The victim was wearing black denim pants and a black t-shirt.
Police recovered a pair of brown leather shoes and a black and red cap at the scene of the accident. A piece of fiberglass that had been attached to the car’s bumper was found in the middle of the road. At the time of the accident, the police found the road to be wet, not under repair, but poorly lit. A search was organized for other debris.
The injured man was taken to the northern hospital in a police vehicle, but a doctor in the emergency department was only able to pronounce him dead. His body was subsequently transported to the morgue of the Dr. A.G. Jeetoo Hospital, Port-Louis. Jeetoo Hospital, Port-Louis, for an autopsy.
After the driver, a 25-year-old man from the village of Poudre d’Or, gave his statement, he was taken into custody on the orders of Assistant Superintendent of Police Sunilduth Nucchedy. The driver was brought before the Pamplemousses court on Tuesday morning, January 30, on a provisional charge of manslaughter. He was subsequently released on bail.
In both cases, the bodies were autopsied by Dr Prem Chamane, Principal Police Medical Officer. In both cases, the cause of death was attributed to multiple injuries. A police investigation has been launched to shed light on the exact circumstances of these accidents.
