Arvin Boolell’s constitutional complaint against Speaker Sooroojdev Phokeer, Prime Minister (PM) Pravind Jugnauth and the National Assembly was called and argued before the Supreme Court on Monday morning 9 October. Both parties presented their arguments.
The Speaker of the National Assembly and the PM contested certain paragraphs of Arvin Boolell’s complaint, which calls into question his eight-week suspension from Parliament.
The Labour Party MP believes that the suspension imposed on him on 11 April 2023 by the Speaker of the National Assembly violates his constitutional rights. He filed a constitutional complaint with the Supreme Court on Thursday 20 April 2023.
The Red MP is also calling for his suspension for the 18 and 25 April 2023 sittings, which he received on 11 April 2023 at the National Assembly, to be frozen in perpetuity. He considers this sanction to be “null and void”.
A ruling on this matter is expected in the coming weeks.
