The retrial stems from Nono’s challenge to the 7-year prison sentence handed down to him by the court in St Denis. According to the Reunionese press, Nono will plead not guilty.
The new trial for cannabis trafficking brought against the Mauritian will finally get under way on 5 October before the criminal court in Saint-Denis, Réunion. His lawyer, Chantal Laguerre, requested the postponement on the morning of Thursday 7 September. The reason given was that she said she had received her client’s file late from the Réunion authorities.The trial is expected to last several days. 10 witnesses have been summoned.
In the meantime, the Mauritian is being held in Domenjod prison.
On 7 July, magistrate Shavina Jugnauth ordered Nono’s extradition. Nono had 21 days to appeal against the decision, but finally decided to accept it. Nono and his friend Jean Hubert Célérine, alias Franklin, were sentenced in 2021 to 7 years’ imprisonment by the Reunionese courts for drug trafficking. However, at the time of the sentencing, they were not on the island.
