On Saturday, March 18, 2023, the Minister of Finance, Renganaden Padayachy, met with economic and social actors in Rodrigues, at the Cultural and Leisure Center of Mont Plaisir, as part of the consultations for the budgetary exercise of the Regional Assembly for the fiscal year 2023-2024. In his speech, the Minister of Finance affirmed his commitment to accompany development projects on the island and mobilize the resources necessary to achieve them. The Minister of Finance, Renganaden Padayachy, was able to make a tour of horizon with the main political and economic actors and members of civil society.
It should be noted that the Chief Commissioner and Commissioner of Finance, Johnson Roussety, will present the second budget of the regional government on Friday. During this exchange with the Minister of Finance, the Chief Commissioner made a point of putting the i’s and t’s on the table regarding his way of seeing things, he stressed that the Rodrigues Regional Assembly is not a department of the Prime Minister’s Office. The Chief Commissioner listed the difficulties faced by the Rodriguans. Regarding maritime services, he mentioned the ship under construction in China and to be delivered by the end of this year, providing solutions to the serious problem of maritime services. The issue of prices of basic commodities was raised by several members of the public during the ongoing consultations with Mauritius to protect consumers in Rodrigues.
The Minister of Finance made a brief intervention to emphasize that he came to listen to policy makers, economic operators, and civil society leaders on the sidelines of the preparations for the 2023 – 24 budget. “I promise you that I will do my utmost to help achieve the objectives decided by my sisters and brothers of Rodrigues. Inflation is a problem that we all face. But we must find ways to help the most vulnerable in society. “This is my assignment and I give you the guarantee that we will identify, the means for a good presentation of the budget”, he says again.
