The Prime Minister spoke at the official ceremony marking the 189th anniversary of the abolition of slavery. The ceremony took place this morning at the Monument de la Route de L’Esclave in Le Morne. After a first historical part, Pravind Jugnauth declared that we have a duty to pass on to future generations what our ancestors accomplished. “We must continue to repair the legacy of slavery,” he declared.
For him, this is an opportunity to realize that the fight against exploitation is permanent. He added that his government is focusing on education to enable all disadvantaged groups and those at the bottom of the ladder to continue climbing the social ladder. He added that it is not easy to catch up with the backwardness accumulated through centuries of oppression. “But education is one way of correcting the injustices of history,” he said. He recalled his government’s achievements in the field of education. He also insisted on the upgrading of the technical sector.

In his official speech to mark the 189th anniversary of the abolition of slavery, Pravind Jugnauth addressed the issue of the Chagos. He indicated that Mauritius has reached a critical stage in negotiations with the United Kingdom concerning the return of sovereignty over the archipelago. “Obviously, I can’t predict what will happen in the future. But we know that we are on the side of justice and truth. We hope that the UK will also do its utmost to respect justice,” he said.
