Panzeri is suspected of having “intervened politically with MEPs in favor of Qatar and Morocco, against payment”, the Greek MEP is suspected of having received money from Doha to “influence the economic and political decisions” of the institution.
For several days, the European press has been revealing the background to the investigation that shakes the European Parliament and which has included the fall of a vice-president of the Parliament and saw Marc Tarabella be searched and suspended by his party.
More than one and a half million euros were found in cash by investigators in Belgium, including a large part at the home of Pier Antonio Panzeri, MEP. The money would have Qatari origins and it is also around the Gulf State that the investigation is focused.
But it appears from court documents obtained by the Morgen and various international media (several Italian newspapers and a Moroccan) that Morocco is also in the sights of justice. Panzeri, it says, is suspected of having “intervened politically with MEPs in favor of Qatar and Morocco, in exchange for payment”, which his wife, daughter and girlfriend knew, the latter having even given Panzeri orders on how to spend the money obtained.
