The president of the Labour Party is challenging by way of judicial review Sooroojdev Phokeer’s decision not to allow his question on the police commissioner’s private lawyers. The matter was called before Chief Justice Rehana Mungly-Gulbul this morning.
Chief State Attorney Verna Nirsimloo, representing the Speaker, has informed the Supreme Court that she opposes the application for judicial review. The case has therefore been adjourned until 18 September.
Patrick Assirvaden is represented by Senior Counsel Sanjay Bhuckory and solicitor Tassarajen Pillay Chedumbrum.
It was last July that the Assirvaden addressed a question to the Prime Minister on the decision of the Commissioner of Police, Anil Kumar Dip, to retain the services of private lawyers. The question was rejected, the office of the Clerk of the National Assembly told the Labour MP.
