The case was called before the Chief Justice this morning in the Supreme Court. Her Ladyship Rehana Mungly-Gulbul announced that she would hear the arguments of the parties concerned every Monday until 30 April, when she will take a decision. Solicitor Pazhany Rangsamy is challenging the constitutionality of new regulations aimed at directing SIM card holders to re-register their cards.
The Chief Judge has informed the parties that no report will be tolerated. The parties will therefore have to finalise the Question and Answer exercise on 8 April 2024.
They must then submit their defences by 15 April 2024 and replies to the defences by 22 April 2024. A date will then be set for hearing the merits of the case.
Sanjeev Teeluckdharry, counsel for Pazhany Rangasamy, reminded the court that the deadline for re-registration of SIM cards was 30 April 2024. The Chief Justice reminded the court that the motion to freeze the regulations had already been heard by the court and that judgment was awaited.
