Silvio Berlusconi, Italian Media Tycoon & Former Prime Minister, Dies at 86

Must Read

Famous Italian media magnate-turned-politician Silvio Berlusconi died at the age of 86.

During postwar Italy, he highlighted the next 30 years with issues like TV spin, tainted claims of corruption, and sex scandals, which were widespread at the time. Berlusconi earned his successful media career through Mediaset empire, an Italian private TV he launched. After his media glory he went on to achieve success as an unmatchable national leader.

He breathed his last in Milan’s San Raffaele hospital in which he was admitted after being diagnosed with a lung infection recently, in addition to already having leukaemia, according to national media reports.

He joined politics in 1993 and become Italy’s elected prime minister the next year. In his political career he served as the nation’s prime minister three times, though not consecutively, that made him the most-serving democratically elected Italian politician. He was expelled from the legislature in 2013 due to a tax scam.

Berlusconi constructed a modern complex on the outskirts of Milan with his own construction company Edilnord. The complex was named Milano 2 which had its own network of cable TV station, cable TV station. It was launched in 1978 and was the stepping stone of the nation’s first national private TV network. He bought local tv stations and showcased same programmes in all of them. Through this technique, he dodged a national ban on broadcasting nationally and in turn made a network nationwide that transferred him all power from pubcaster RAI, which earlier controlled all broadcasting.

To make his channels more appealing he showcased American shows like “Dallas,” “Baywatch” and “The Smurfs”. He also made massive deals with Hollywood studios to purchase rights to American movies. Investigation into these deals years later was made the biggest reason behind his ouster from parliament.
