The 44-year-old opposition leader Bassirou Diomaye Faye, who is relatively unknown, received congratulations from Macky Sall, the president of Senegal, on Monday, March 25.
Less than two weeks after being freed from prison to contest in the election, he is expected to become the next president of the country in West Africa. The Senegalese News Agency (APS) reports that the results would be made public by the Constitutional Council beginning on April 3.
Based on preliminary findings, the other front-runner, the former prime minister, who had the support of President Sall, acknowledged loss.
Dioamaye Faye pledged to combat corruption and reign with humility. Diomaye Faye in response to the move, said, “I salute the approach of the other candidates who, without exception, have honoured a very Senegalese tradition without even waiting for the official results to be announced by the authorised state bodies. Their congrats are a beautiful testament to their excellence.” He remarked on Monday, March 25, at a speech in Dakar.
He also promised Senegal’s allies that he would be dependable and that he would push Africa’s political and economic unity. “I would like to say to the international community and to our bilateral and multilateral partners that Senegal will always honor it’s commitments. It will remain a friendly country and a secure and reliable ally for any partner that engages with us in virtuous, respectful and mutually productive cooperation,” he told a packed room.
