Must Read

Harryduth Ghoorbin, 63, died of his injuries early Sunday morning, April 7, on the Route Royale de Haute Rive near the Hotel Azuri in Roches Noires. He was riding his moped when he was hit head-on by a car. The car was driven by a 26-year-old bricklayer, living in Argy, Flacq, who tested positive for alcohol. He had thirty-nine micrograms of alcohol in his breath. By Sunday April 7, the number of deaths on our roads had risen to thirty-five, compared with twenty-five at the same time in 2023.

The accident occurred shortly before 6 a.m. on Sunday morning, April 7. A white Toyota car collided with a red Peugeot motorcycle. When police officers from Rivière du Rempart police station arrived, led by Sergeant Prayagsing, Harryduth Ghoorbin was lying unconscious on his back on the road. An ambulance from the Service d’Aide Médicale d’Urgence (Samu) was called to the scene of the accident. A doctor on board examined the victim and found that he had already given up the ghost.

The body was initially transported to the morgue of the northern hospital, before being transferred to that of Dr A.G.Jeetoo, Port-Louis, for an autopsy. The autopsy, carried out by Dr. Sudesh Kumar Gungadin, head of the police forensic department, attributed the death to multiple injuries.  Two residents of cité Hibiscus, Flacq who were travelling in the car were also injured. They were taken to Flacq hospital for treatment. The two injured, aged 28 and 35 respectively, were later able to return home.

The driver was taken to Rivière du Rempart police station to give a statement. He was first given a breathalyzer test by a police officer from the Emergency Response Service. The test was positive. He had thirty-nine micrograms of alcohol in his breath. During the day, he was brought before the Bail and Remand Court in Port-Louis on a provisional charge of manslaughter.

He was then taken back to the police cell. On the morning of Monday April 8, he was brought before the Pamplemousses court. He was subsequently released on bail.
