103 is the number of deaths recorded on our roads since the beginning of the year. Although the number of deaths has decreased as compared to last year, the Minister of Transport, Alan Ganoo is alarming the public at this festive time. The Minister pointed out that the government has done a lot of work both in terms of awareness and the tightening of penalties.
But it seems, he concedes, that some motorists still ignore the laws. Thus, for 2022, Alan Ganoo has already announced the installation of ‘Belisha Beacon’ (flashing streetlights) at strategic locations. This will allow, he says, to illuminate the visibility of motorists, especially near the crossings. According to him, this is a project which has been delayed because of the pandemic. But the road infrastructure project is on track and will see the light of the day early next year.
On Monday 13 December, Minister Alan Ganoo also recalled that the government has made road safety a national priority. A national road safety strategy for the period 2016-2025 has been developed, with the goal of reducing the number of fatalities and serious injuries by 50% by 2025.
