The refloating operations at Bain des Dames will be delayed. Inspectors from the Mauritius Ports Authority (MPA) have discovered an unregistered cargo of Maritime Gas Oil (MGO) in the fish hold of one of the grounded vessels. The operation may be compromised!
According to a statement from the Mauritius Ports Authority, the refloating exercise of Maan Yu Feng 01 has been completed. The vessel is stable and ready for a towing operation to the Port Louis harbour. The refloating of the Maan Yu Feng 168 will continue on Friday, March 04 as well as the extraction process.
The tugs will be able to get back to action once the trawler has been emptied of all apparent pollutants, including fuel oil and spoiled fish by the company Polygreen, supported by the Solid Waste Division.
However, there is a risk that things will be delayed. A surplus and unclassified cargo stored in the fish hold was found. This discovery on board this vessel is already considered a violation of maritime codes by the MPA. Commenting on this embarrassing discovery for the operation, MPA chairman Sanjeev Ghurburrun said: “We have discovered that in one of the boats there is diesel. This is a violation. There is much more MGO than we thought in a cargo ship. This may delay the operation. An investigation is underway.
