Red zone: Residents of Vallée-Pitot Express Their Anger On The Street

Hundreds of residents of the Vallée-Pitot red zone took to the streets this Monday evening. They oppose the maintenance of the red zone in their locality. According to reports, police officers dispatched to maintain order were mistreated. The inhabitants of Vallée-Pitot went on the streets in large numbers last night, Monday, June 7, to demonstrate their disapproval when the maintenance of the red zone has not yet been communicated until 8 p.m.

On their way back up, the latter removed the roadblocks and threw stones in the direction of the police vehicles. The residents of Vallée-Pitot and Plaine-Verte had taken to Magon Street shortly after 8 p.m. to express their anger. Removing police barricades, they demanded that Vallée-Pitot be removed from the zone, as initially planned by the authorities. This was before the official decision to maintain the red zone status was made at 9:40 pm. Vallée-Pitot has been in a red zone for two weeks to prevent the spread of Covid-19. And the period in the red zone was to expire at 8 p.m. this Monday. Except that the authorities at the said time had still not issued any confirmation whether Vallée-Pitot would be kept in the red zone or not. Exasperated residents took to the streets to express their anger. Finally, it was around 9:40 pm that the Ministry of Health issued a statement confirming that Vallée-Pitot would indeed remain in the red zone. According to the Government Gazette, the area will remain red until 8 p.m. next Monday, June 14.

Labour MPs Shakeel Mohamed, Osman Mahomed, Ehsan Juman, Farhad Aumeer, as well as Mauritian activist MP Reza Uteem went on the ground to try to calm down the situation.
