Ram Dhurmea former director of the Mauritius Meteorological Services (MMS) has been sacked with immediate effect, today Wednesday 17, by the ministry of Local Government and Disaster Risk Management. He was dismissed for providing inaccurate information on the path and risks associated with the Tropical Cyclone Belal.
Earlier during the day, Ram Dhurmea, director of the Mauritius Meteorological Services, said in a letter addressed to Cabinet Secretary Pramod Neerunjun on Tuesday January 16, 2024, said: “I never submitted any resignation nor officially stepped. He said that he “never submitted any resignation nor has officially stepped down” even though he has been ordered to step down against his will. He said that it was agreed that his stepping down would be temporary while an investigation was carried out. Ram Dhurmea insists, in the letter, that he has nothing to reproach himself for. He maintains that he has followed all protocols and has issued “timely and accurate forecasts”. “I have personally intervened on several occasions, notably whenever there have been drastic changes, reiterating the imminent threat Belal represented and stressing on the potential risks of flood and water accumulations due to heavy rainfall”, he explains.
