Prime Minister Encourages Citizens To Adopt A Healthy And Physically Active Lifestyle

Must Read

While the Government is steadfastly stepping up to provide the necessary sports infrastructure and facilities for the population to adopt a physically fit and active lifestyle, it is equally important for everyone to avail of these and take the necessary actions to maintain a good health and ensure their own welfare.

The Prime Minister, Mr Pravind Kumar Jugnauth, was speaking yesterday afternoon at the inauguration ceremony of the L’Avenir Village Hall and the L’Avenir Sports Complex, in St Pierre.

The Vice-Prime Minister, Minister of Education, Tertiary Education, Science and Technology, Mrs Leela Devi Dookun-Luchoomun, Member of Parliament, Mr Yogida Sawmynaden, and other personalities were also present.

In his keynote speech, the Prime Minister underscored the significance of the L’Avenir Sports Complex project, adding that this initiative, which includes a soccer pitch, children’s playground, volleyball court, and health track, is a pivotal part of the Government’s mission to ensure widespread access to sports infrastructure and facilities.

We are investing massively to ensure equal access to sports facilities for the whole population, for our Government has made its core priority the welfare and good health of all Mauritians, stated Mr Jugnauth.

He underscored the vital importance of practising regular sports activities and keeping fit to ensure good health and avoid suffering from Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs), recalling that Government is spearheading a national sensitisation campaign to encourage the adoption of a healthy lifestyle.

The Prime Minister raised the alarm as regards the number of Mauritians suffering from NCDS, such as diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular diseases and obesity, cautioning that these make them more vulnerable to complications of other ailments. These are preventable by adopting healthy food habits, avoiding abuse of cigarettes and alcoholic drinks and engaging in regular sports activities, he added.

Furthermore, he remarked that the two infrastructures will enable the locality’s residents to indulge in leisure and sports activities as well as engage in a more active social life, while emphasising that social interactions will contribute to mental wellness.

Besides, the Prime Minister thanked the Republic of India and the People’s Republic of China for their support in the concretisation of the projects, underpinning their unflinching support to Mauritius in its developmental projects.

Regarding other projects in the pipeline, Mr Jugnauth announced the upcoming construction of the La Laura—Morcellement VRS 2 L’Avenir Link Road. He also reaffirmed the Government’s objective of continuously improving public infrastructure, reminding that other major projects, including the AYUSH centre, a modern cardiac centre, a modern hospital at Moka, and the extension of the Reduit Metro Express line to St Pierre and Flacq, are on the agenda.

As for Vice-Prime Minister Dookun-Luchoomun, she highlighted that the projects are part of Government’s endeavours to enhance the quality of life of the population. She also dwelt on the numerous recent financial benefits being provided to pregnant women and their newborn babies.
