A team of police officers from the Trou-Fanfaron police station went to La Citadelle, Port-Louis on the morning of Wednesday June 14, after receiving an inquiry from the Police Main Command Control Centre (PMCCC). In a bush behind the metal fences in front of the main entrance to the site, the police officers picked up eighteen Rs 1000 banknotes which they suspect to be counterfeit. They all bear the same series of vertical and horizontal numbers, i.e. CH096376.
At around 10.15 a.m., these police officers, led by Corporal Goorah, went to La Citadelle. PMCCC officers saw surveillance camera footage of people picking up banknotes. After picking up the eighteen banknotes, the officers conducted a search of the area, but no other notes were found.
Information gathered at the scene indicates that several other notes were picked up by passers-by. The fake denominations found were seized as evidence. They were taken to the Trou-Fanfaron police station. Three people were questioned before being allowed to leave.
An investigation into the case has been launched by elements of the Criminal Investigation Division (CID) of the Metrpolitan Police of the Northern Division, under the supervision of Assistant Police Commissioner Mohunlall Madhow, the divisional commander, in order to trace the origin of the notes and disable any possible network.
