Parliament : Law Affecting Private Radio Stations Gets First Reading

Must Read

Another law that will be talked about a lot and that could also lead to a challenge in the Supreme Court. The Independent Broadcasting Authority Amendment bill will be presented to the Parliament this Tuesday, November 23, in first reading.

A law that a priori concerns private radio stations. Like the fact that the licenses of private radio stations will be valid only for one year, renewable. Instead of three years.

According to the defender of this law, it aims to allow the Independent Broadcasting Authority to strengthen its legal arsenal to sanction private radio stations and thus guarantee the freedom of expression of all citizens.

The aim is to have more synergy between the IBA and the ICTA.

However, several lawyers and trade unionists have expressed their reservations about this law. According to them, it would undermine freedom of expression, democracy and constitute an obstacle to the right to information. Others evoke the right to freedom of expression. Which would not be the same anymore.

It will be according to them a way to muzzle the press.

On the side of the three main private radio stations, the directors are unanimous that they will consult their lawyer to know what to do.
