After eight days at the Dr. A.G. Jeetoo Hospital in Port-Louis, Joakim Rabotte, 82 years old, succumbed to his injuries at 6:30 a.m. on Wednesday June 15. The resident of Cimetière Road, St. Croix, was injured in a road accident on Wednesday, June 8, on Nicolay Road, St. Croix. He was hit by a motorcycle driven by a police officer as he crossed the road. The autopsy attributed his death to a pulmonary embolism.
On June 8, a 28-year-old police officer from Le Hochet, Terre-Rouge, was driving his Suzuki motorcycle on Nicolay Road, St. Croix. He was coming from the direction of the police station and was heading towards the capital. Almost in front of the soccer field of Père Laval, an individual suddenly crossed the road. The policeman applied the brake and tried to avoid him, but the old man was thrown onto the road.
The local resident was transported to the hospital with injuries. After receiving treatment, he was admitted to the ward. His condition was not considered serious. However, Joakim Rabotte breathed his last this Wednesday morning. His body was autopsied at the Dr. Jeetoo Hospital morgue on the morning of Wednesday, June 15 by Dr. Prem Chamane, Principal Police Medical Officer. He attributed his death to a pulmonary embolism.
The police officer involved in this accident was brought before the Port-Louis court on Wednesday, May 15. He is facing a provisional charge of manslaughter. He was released on a bail of Rs 10,000 and an IOU of Rs 100,000.
