Must Read

The election petition filed by Ezra Jhuboo was dismissed on Monday by the Supreme Court. Justice Gaitree Jugessur-Manna and Justice Denis Mootoo gave their ruling. For them, Ezra Jhuboo failed to show any irregularity in the counting exercise and the computer room.

Ezra Jhuboo, a defeated candidate in constituency number 14 was seeking a recount of votes after the 7 November 2019 general elections through his election petition. The National Alliance candidate finished fourth behind the three Morisian Alliance candidates: Alan Ganoo (20 631 votes), Sandra Mayotte (18 204 votes) and Nand Prakash Ramchurrun (15 833 votes). Ezra Jhuboo obtained 15 648 votes.

In a short statement on his Facebook page, Irfan Rahman, the Electoral Commissioner, said he welcome this decision of the Supreme Court. “During the trial, my collaborators from the Electoral Commissioner’s office and I explained the conduct of the election in Savanne/Rivière-Noire in detail. As a result, we demonstrated that we all acted within the strict framework of the law during this election. I am therefore comforted by the fact that the Supreme Court recognises that the counting of votes in Savanne/Black River was not marred by any irregularity”, he stated.
