Many Nigerians have persisted in demanding that relevant agencies conduct a national investigation into the rise in counterfeit goods in the market as the rest of the world gets ready for the start of a new year.
A lot of people have taken to the internet to demand that the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration (NAFDAC) look into the issue and find a way to stop the proliferation of phoney goods on the Nigerian market.
This occurs after the agency recently disposed of counterfeit goods totalling approximately $750,000, including drinks, packaged foods, medications, and toiletries.
The director general of NAFDAC reports that in a market in Aba, South East of the country, the agency recently discovered counterfeiters engaged in the production of a range of counterfeit beverages, including wines, soft drinks, and other products.
Given that at least 40 phoney consumer goods imitating well-known brands have been discovered to date, some claim that the counterfeit product trend has taken over Nigeria’s markets.
Once Nigerians began to voice concerns in the first week of December about the sale of phoney wine and alcoholic drinks at nightclubs, the fake consumer goods trend took off.
The NAFDAC claims that 240 temporary factories had to close because the counterfeiters’ illegal goods had already entered Nigerian markets before it took action.
