The Director of the Mauritius Examinations Syndicate (MES), Mrs D.S. Thanacoody Soborun, made the announcement of the results, on Thursday 10th June, at the Headquarters of MES in Reduit.
The pass rate for the first batch of the National Certificate of Education (NCE) examinations for the year 2020-2021 for the Republic of Mauritius stood at 71.6%. Among the 14 044 students who sat for the examinations in nine mandatory subjects, girls have recorded a pass rate of 75.9%, against 67.1% for boys.
Mrs. Thanacoody Soborun has expressed her satisfaction regarding the overall performance of the candidates. She highlighted that a satisfactory performance has been recorded in subjects such as English, French, and Literature. However, she encouraged the students to put in more efforts for some subjects, such as Mathematics and Science. “The NCE results”, she added, “will be used to determine the competencies acquired by students and identify their academic strengths and weaknesses”.
Furthermore, the director of MES underlined that this year, Kreol Morisien has been evaluated at Grade 9 level for the first time and it is quite a historical step. “The overall registered performance”, she observed, “has been very promising for this subject, especially in grammar, with a recorded pass rate of 96.6%”.
Mrs Thanacoody Soborun indicated that Gaetan Raynal State College registered a flawless performance by obtaining a pass rate of 100% for the NCE examinations.
Moreover, she underpinned those students have showed great potential and with the constant support from their teachers, their performance will keep on improving over the years. As far as the ‘Academies’ are concerned, she has informed that 2 168 candidates have been admitted in 12 ‘Academies’. She also commended the 192 candidates who have recorded an aggregate eight, which is a praiseworthy performance.
Regarding Rodrigues, she outlined that out of the 950 students assessed, 52.1% have obtained the required level to accede to Grade 10. She added that girls have recorded a pass rate of 59.6%, and boys 45.4%.
The MES Director also underscored that following the COVID-19 pandemic, the NCE examinations were held under extremely specific conditions. She pointed out that the marking exercise has been carried out in an unprecedented situation. According to her, all necessary arrangements have been made to ensure that the examinations and the marking exercise are held in the best possible conditions while strictly abiding to all sanitary and precautionary measures.
