Navin Ramgoolam faced the press this Thursday alongside Paul Bérenger and Xavier-Luc Duval. Commenting on Vikram Hurdoyal’s resignation from the National Assembly, he said that what the people and the country need is general elections. Vikram Hurdoyal was removed from his post as Minister of Agro-Industry and Food Security on 12 February. He received the news on his return to Mauritius. On Tuesday, he resigned as MP for No. 10. For Navin Ramgoolam, Pravind Jugnauth has the right to dismiss Vikram Hurdoyal as minister, but he has the duty to give an explanation to the country. Navin Ramgoolam also spoke about the Silver Bank and the appointment of Arvindsingh K Gokhool as Conservator.
Duval: “There will be a reinvigorated opposition when the Parliament resumes”.
Referring to the resumption of the Parliament on 26 March, the opposition leader said that “despite the Speaker and the obstacles, there will be a reinvigorated opposition…”. He added that Parliament “will be the perfect opportunity to clarify Hurdoyal’s dismissal”. Xavier Duval wanted to know why the report on tourist arrivals had not been published since November 2023. Xavier Duval also commented on the situation of Air Mauritius, which, according to him, is in bad shape.
Paul Bérenger expressed his disapproval of the way in which the Prime Minister dismissed the former Minister of Agriculture. For him, this is unacceptable and shows a lack of respect for democracy. He asked the Prime Minister to postpone the SIM Card or new identity card registration until a new government is in place and at the same time, mentioned that on 24 February, the three parties will celebrate Women’s Day at the Port Louis municipality and on Independence Day, a wreath laying ceremony will take place at the statue of SSR, the father of independence. He also joined the other leaders in welcoming the President of India, who will be our Chief Guest for Independence Day.
